S.107 CL - Group Stage last round (09/11/2013 12:22)

Here are today CL reports:

The biggest story came from Group 1. DEATH HOUSE did just enough to beat Hotspurs 1-0 and stay perfect with 7/7 wins. Despite Hotspurs lose, third place AKNEO needed a big win against The Busby Babes in order to leap over the English. The Swedes "came to their aid" as Mattzon sent his youth squad against the Polish. The game ended with a thrashing 6-0 to AKNEO, a win that sent them through.
"I am happy that I went through, however it was just a massive amount of luck" said AKNEO manager HektorArte. Hotspurs manager on the other hand was furious: "I would have still went through if not for the Busby Babes but he helped AKNEO goal difference and I have sent him a message saying exactly how I feel, it's a lack of respect for the competition". Mattzon replied: "I fielded a team consisting of mostly reserves because I had no chance to qualify and it goes really bad for me in the league this season, so I have to prioritize in the small choices I have, to be able to influence".
On the question if he thinks that his move affected the final standings, Mattzon answered: "It's clear that this affected the result now when you look at it afterwards and I'm sorry for Spudgregs sake. I did what was best for my team and nothing else. It may seem selfish, but so is the game".

AKNEO will now face DINAMO ZARAGOZA in the next round. The Spaniards made no mistakes and won a deserved 0-2 win in Italy against FratiFrancescani, it was the Italian first lose this campaign. This result left former CL champions KA Barcelona dissapointed as their 0-1 win away against brave Knudde didn't help them to advance.
"I do not know what could be the problem. I always play for my best team, my team average age is perfect, Q is high and I set good tactics", said frustrated Klucsesz, "I'm not favoured by the simulator this season".

In group 6 delight and depression were Blest fans' feelings as they saw their team winning 2-1 over Champion FC, who assured a place in the next stage yesterday, but finishing third after thevikings defeated uninterested Connemara United 1-3.
"[I'm] disappointed, yes, but not much to do with it" said Roggbif, Blest manager, "It went wrong in the first match, my opponent had 1 chance in 90 minutes, which was a penalty, and he won - I did only had 2 chances, but still".
Blest is not the only as none of the Norwegian teams made it through to the Knockout Stage, a shocking stat for one of ML major leagues. However, Roggbif didn't sound surprised: "The Norwegian league is only good in Q, there are only 2-3 good managers with tactical skills here in Norway. The English league, for example, is much better tactically than the Norwegian".

In group 8 Ruwenda gave no chance, outclassing former champions AFC Dzhebel United 0-4 away. The German eventually finished first after Lions of Darkness were held to a 1-1 draw against bottom side IMPARAVEIS. "Well, it's about time I advanced to the KO phase. In the last seasons, I've been close to it a couple of times, both in SC and CL, but have always been a couple of points short. So, yeah, I feel pretty darn good", said Kadiya, Ruwenda delightful manager.
Despite the impressive play, Ruwenda is placed only 6 place on the German League, "for me it is [hard] because I lack depth in my squad. If I had one additional player on every position, my chances of being competitive in the league would be far greater".

The German will come as the underdog tomrrow as they play CzarneKoszule but Kadiya is confident with his team: "Maybe I am a slight underdog, but I am used to being in this position. I was a huge underdog in the match against GR8 Angelz and I managed to beat him. My match with CzarneKoszule will be IMO a coin flip. Both of our teams have almost the same Q, similar stats and morale". About the Polish manager he said: "I've never spoken with him, but judging from his trophy shelf he is a great and well seasoned manager. I definitely have nothing but respect for him".

Here are the full fixtures for the Round of 16:
DEATH HOUSE FC (Greece) - FratiFrancescani (Italy)
Unique FC (England) - Real Antoñico CF (Spain)
kavalacio fc (Greece) - Champion FC (Australia)
zibertoFC (Vietnam) - Lions of Darkness (England)
DINAMO ZARAGOZA (Spain) - AKNEO (Poland)
BLACK PEARL (Romania) - Craiova-Maxima (USA)
thevikings (Romania) - FC Real Manager (Romania)
FC Ruwenda (Germany) - CzarneKoszule (Poland)

The crunch match is undoubtly BLACK-PEARL against Craiove Maxima. But many eyes, or at least mine , will look after one of the most entertaining team in the past seasons: Unique FC.

Their manager, King Leonidas, fancied me with a special interview.
- You finished first with a perfect record. Is playing good on CL affecting your league games?

I'm lucky to have a large squad and an easy CL group so I only had to play a full strength team for a couple of games, as most teams didn't try in my group so I could save fitness for league games, currently I've only dropped 3 points from the games after CL games and that loss was more due to my 2 injuries after my subs had already come on so I was effectively down to 9 players and no GK, that's not to say I wouldn't have lost anyway as I was already behind but it wasn't due to poor fitness as I had good fitness before our game so I don't think it has effected me that much this season, but it can do if you have a tough group and tough games following CL games. Teams with small squads struggle a lot more.

- As in the last 5 seasons, you are the favourite again to win ML. Do you think you have a chance against other 14 team with a Q of 97 and above?

Thanks but I don't consider myself the favorite but definitely capable of winning it again and that is my aim.

- Do you feel any pressure of previous successes?

No pressure, I've been successful so any more success is just a bonus :)
