Local Team or a Big Club (01/09/2010 13:00)

I never understood why someone - let's say from Debrecen - would be a big fan of Barcelona? Or worse,of MTK , instead of Debrecen

Why would you be a big fan of a team?

From my point of view someone is a big fan of a team because the team represents that person, represents his dreams, represents his town. Or is winning everything? It would be the same as if the luxembourgese (the inhebitants of Luxemburg) would go to Germany because Germany is bigger, better and stronger. And they wouldn't care anymore for their country.

Has the local pride totally disappered? Don't the roots count? And being the best is the most important thing without taking in consideration anything else?

That's why Atheltic Bilbao is a club I admire. They try to do everything with local players. With persons that know, understand and live the local culture. They respect the town and the suporters for what they are. They are not modern mercenaries (e.g.: Rivaldo, Beckham, Henry,...)

That's why I'm a big fan of my home town team - although it has not won any major trophy for almost 30 years

How/why did you become a fan for your team?

I'm a Vålerenga-fan.

Vålerenga is from my hometown, Oslo in Norway. And as Vålerenga is on the east-side of Oslo, and I come from the east-side, it was a natural choice :)

I am a Feyenoord Rotterdam fan.

I do not live in Rotterdam it is a 30 minutes drive. Feyenoord represent the hard working class, and that is what il like about it.

the thing I like about them is the style which they use- Possession Football.

Most players are home grown too.

liverpool fan here, the reason for it is they won the league in the year i was born, infact around that time they won pretty much everythin. and even though they havent won anythin for years i will always stand by them.

Im from Split, Croatia, and I support HAJDUK - its my hometown club - last 15 years the club is buying foreign players and they havent achieved nothing in Europe ( since quarterfinals in champions league , season 93/94 ). this year ( thank god for finance crisis ) we have only one foreign player and in the rest of the team is almost 90 % young players who are the product of HAJDUKs school of football.

I happen to be from a suburb south of Cleveland, Ohio USA. I am also a very big Columbus Crew fan (1.5 hours more south) in MLS. I also follow Liverpool FC in the English Premier League as well as Barnet FC in English League Two. I have no connections to these two teams but it gives me something to follow when MLS is on break in the winter. I tried to follow Barcelona early on when I was younger but I don't speak Spanish very well and so reading match reports and such was a bit of a struggle. I can understand wanting to be on a winning side being that Cleveland is notorious for coming up short or even not at all in all sports (baseball, basketball, American football). I did not choose the Crew, they happened to be the team closest to where I live and because of it, I struggled with them for the first 12 years of their existence (winning the US Open Cup in 2002) until they won the Championship in 2008.
