MANCHESTER UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB (26/12/2010 20:15) |
Manchester United Club Profile
Formed as Newton Heath in 1878, the club changed its name to Manchester United in 1902 and first won the title in 1908 and the FA Cup the following year.
Sir Matt Busby became the manager in 1945 and steered the club to championship winning seasons in 1952, 1956 and 1957. But tragedy struck 12 months on when the plane carrying the team home from a European night crashed, killing eight players.
Busby survived and led his rebuilt team to an FA Cup success in 1963, then league titles in 1965 and 1967. The Manchester United side, including the legendary Manchester United players the likes of Sir Bobby Charltonand George Best, then won the European Cup in 1968 before Busby resigned a year later.
Manchester United then had to wait 26 years for their next league title but the arrival of Ferguson from Aberdeen signalled the beginning of a stellar period for the club. United reclaimed the title in 1993 and won further Premiership crowns in 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003.
More silverware was added to the Red Devils' bulging trophy cabinet with FA Cup success in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003, plus League Cup victories in 1992 and 2006.
Perhaps the most memorable time in the club's history was the treble-winning season of 1999, when they added the Champions League trophy to the league title and FA Cup. Chelsea briefly broke their dominance by winning consecutive titles in 2005 and 2006 but United roared back last season winning the Premiership and the Champions League.
