TV-Income from league matches..or not? (20/08/2008 21:46) |
From time to time, some of you very clever players manage to stumble across bugs (faults in our software) that we do not know about ourselves. Most of the times we get such reports, it is wrong, and human error is involved at some point. This is not a problem, and something all developers are more or less used to. The REAL danger here lies in becoming too arrogant to REALLY check, even if you have checked it 10 times before. Here the other day, I got a message saying that we had a bug in our leagues, and that no matches had been played in the Brazilian League for "several days". This is of course something that is fairly easy to check, and also something that you would expect to be reported in by more than 1 person over the course of "several days", and indeed, this was a misunderstanding. Teams in brazil had indeed played the matches they should, and all was in order. A few weeks back, it was the Friendlies page not working for a tiny number of people, and we could not find any plausible cause for such a problem. Until suddenly, we stumbeled upon the problem, which was special characters in a stadium-name, which broke the entire page. And of course, only 6 teams had this special character in their stadium name, so very few were affected. But once again, it was fixed due to some stubborn players who kept on complaining, and finally I was able to find a pattern and fix it! Today, I received a support-request from someone claiming we were cheating his team when it comes to money from TV-Coverage of some games. My initial response was of course that this was somewhat unlikely, as this should have been noticed by a lot more people, as it would have been a problem that are months old. Furthermore, it was unlikely that it would only affect SOME teams and not all. But I started digging, and indeed, I found a potential flaw in the simulator which COULD lead to the lack of income from TV-Coverage, even though it was both listed and taxed! By now, an emergency fix has been uploaded to all live-servers that wil make sure this does not happen again, and as always I am sorry it snuck in in the first place. As for compensation, there will be none, as it is impossible to go back to find out how many cases would be involved, and so any compensation would add to the unfairness. Of course, with the Div 1 teams being more often on TV than others, the top teams have been hit the hardest, but they are usually also the teams who can actually afford it. So allthough I am sorry to offer no compensation, I am convinced it is the best solution. I am glad it was found and fixed, so thank you very much, Charlie249, for finding it, for reporting the exact details and providing me with screenshots. Much appriciated. Needless to say, the fix was also applied to the new simulator that is still under development. Looking forward to next season, as always, with hopefully less bugs and a much better simulator and much better performance during peak hours! Spinner ManagerLeague HQ |
