The promised Mallorca Blog! (05/09/2006 15:26)
Since there has been a certain amount of talk about my vacation in Mallorca, I promised to post a bigger entry about it here in my Blog. So here goes:

Once upon a time there was a family of 3 who decided to go to Mallorca on vacation (for the 8th time I might add!)

The destination was a little town called Cala Bona, which used to be a small fishing-village on the south-east cost of the island.

Tourism has expanded the once sleepy little town to what is now a propr tourist-trap with dozens of restaurants, shops that all sell the same towels and tanning-oils and postcards.
One day we decided to rent a car and have a look around the island.

We stopped for some sightseeing in Palma (the capital) and then up into the mountains to have a look at Valdemosa, one of the prettiest towns on the island, so they say anyway.

And it is true, it is seriously pretty. Allthough primed for robbing tourists of their money, they manage to do so without ruining the impression of being a ozy little town high up in the mountains.

More than 1 ice-cream ended its life up there during our visit, probably more like 20 ;)
If you happen to stop by Palma someday, and are at least remotely instrested in history or architecture, you have to visit the huge cathedral there.

The Seo, as it is called, was built on the site of a preexisting Arab mosque. One night in 1229, as Jaime I was on his way to recapture Mallorca, his fleet was struck by a terrible storm. He vowed the and there to the Virgin Mary that if he survived nature´s fury, he would erect a church in her honor. And after the storm had blown over, finding himself safe and sound, he immediately undertook the project. It was a vow that was to take an inordinate amount of time to fulfill. begun in 1230, the cathedral was finished in 1601.

It also houses a museum right at the entrance with some truly stunning artifacts from the 12th centrury.

The bell tower, still unfinished today, is 52 meter high with three ogive-arched stories. It holds nine bells, the most famous of which is the N´Eloi: 2 meter in diameter, it weighs more than 5.700 kilo
The garden outside the cathedral is worth a visit all by itself. Even our daughter and her friend were duely impressed, not usually intrested in general sight-seeing :)

By the way, if you plan to see the island, you should take a full day just for Palma, it is a big city with too much to cover in just a few hours. It is well worth the time! And if you plan to do some shopping as well, you probably need more then just 1 day :)
Back in Cala Bona, when I wasn't working to correct the problems with the season-change in ManagerLeague, the days swooshed by under the sun and palmtrees.

This picture was taken outside our favorite lunch-pub, called Waterfront. Highly recommended, and their home-made curries kick ass!
Swimming is a natural part of the vacation, and since the beach next to the hotel is not exactly great, well, with 4 pools at the hotel, we did spend most of the time in the pool.

I actually managed to get a proper tan this year! My wife was somewhat shy this year, since she doesn't like to show her pregnant tummy too much, thinking people will belive she is fat. DUH!

Women!
Entertainment is never far away in Cala Bona, for kids, and older kids ;)
The local cousine is mostly seasfood, which isn't too strange when you think about it. Allthough I am mostly a meat-eater myself, one has to try some of these strange fish-dishes with types of fish I have never seen or tasted before.

Most of the restaurants had pretty much the same menu, with burgers, t-bones, pasta and pizza, but once in a while you come across a gem.

One such gem is a restaurant called Janet & John's which I can safely recommend. I haven't tried any seafood there, but they have the best steak in town (trust me, I have tried most of the restaurants there!) It is an english restaurant run by a very hospitable english family who picked up and left for Mallorca 18 years ago.

Worth a visit!
No vacation without a banana-split!
Not for me anyway!

Truth be told, I gained some weight down there ;)
And what a pretty sight it is, a lit pool at nighttime. I find this sight appealing like nothing else, and we did enjoy our fair share of late-night dips :)

I also discovered I can swim about 25 meters under water before I have to go up to grab some air.
Towards the end of the day, we got some spectacular sunsets as well, which I didn't quite manage to capture on camera.

I am now saving for a proper camera, and I hope to be able to afford a Canon D350 or 400 for when the baby is due in Januray
I also managed to grab a shot of a "strange" moon that shone with a mysterious purple/blueish light one night.

I wish I had a better camera though, allthough my Olympus Camedia C-760 enjoys a 10x optical zoom, which is very decent for a small digital camera.

So while this shone down on us, we enjoyed a game of cards while listening to the sound of the waves...
This was our view from our hotel-room.

Certainly something I could easily get used to!

The ocean, palmtrees, the pool...oh yeah
A nice picture of my wife...

Oh, and she says not to look at her figure, and stresses me to say that she is pregnant!

Yes, I think they know now, honey :
So thats pretty much it, and do watch out if you come across this man on vacation, he looks pretty mean!

And especially if he has to work duruing his stay!

Do notice the t-shirt though!

Thats it for Mallorca 2006! I think the summer 2007 will be somewhat different with a tiny baby and all, but we shall see ;)
